A BRUSSELS HISTORICAL TAPESTRY By Frans van der Hecke, mid-17th Century, after cartoons by Peter Paul Rubens Woven in wools and silks, depicting The Dismissal of the Lictors , from the series of The Life of Decius Mus , with Decius Mus standing beside his white horse gesturing to three Lictors holding two fasces, one inscribed 'SPQR', within an Italianate landscape, the borders with strapwork, scallop-shells and dolphins with fruits and flowers, the angles centred by a grotesque mask and the top with two winged female figures issuing from acanthus leaves and centred by a laurel leaf, within a blue outer slip and the lower section with a patterned additional strip, the blue outer border with Brussels town mark and ,weavers mark 'F.V.H.', minor areas of reweaving and patching 133 in. x 146 in. (338 cm. x 371 cm.), excluding additional strip at bottom
