A Boxwood Napoleonic Model Of The 52 Gun British Frigate AMETHYST Anonymous; ca. 1800 A very fine model of this 52 gun frigate with solid hull construction and veneer inlays along the topsides of the gun deck. The waist and rubbing strakes are painted black, and the bottom is a faux verdis gris. At the bow is a figurehead of a Roman warrior and the head rails have carved scroll work. At the stern the quarter galleries and transom are detailed with two carved lions, and painted details which include a classical shield, quiver and arrows, along with the balcony and other details. The deck is scored veneer to replicate deck planking. Deck details include: brass cannons mounted on sleds, pin and fife rails, water casks, stove pipe, two capstans, companionway and doghouse, ships wheel, two ships boats carried amidships, deck gratings and numerous other details. The masting and rigging (mostly later) is complete with standing and running rigging with ratlines, backstays, forestays and bracing lines. The model is displayed on a plinth finished in burled walnut bookend veneer, framed in mahogany with additional veneers. 21¼ x 11¼ x 14¾ in. (54 x 28.6 x 37.7 cm.) (cased dimensions)
