A Booke of the Natures and Properties...of the Bathes in England...; A most excellent and perfecte homish apothecarye..., together 4 parts in 1 vol., first complete edition, black letter, titles with woodcut arms and devices, numerous woodcuts of plants and herbs, with errata in part 2 only (2G1&2) and with blank 2F4 only (of 4 blanks), occasional early ink marginalia (including 6 depictions of penises and a helpful caption describing the objects in an 18th century hand on P2 of part 1), O6 browned and with long repaired tear, but with minor loss to a few letters, bound into a 17th century ?German binding of purple vellum with various metal decorative pieces to covers [Henrey 368; Nissen 2013; STC 24367], folio, Cologne, [Heirs of Arnold Birckman], 1568. *** ‘Turner was the first Englishman to waken his countrymen’s minds to a little of what was new in the botanical world’ (Hunt). Turner was Dean of Wells, a physician and naturalist. His support of the Reformation led to his exile on two occasions, which explains the printing of the second part of his herbal in Cologne. Provenance: 'James Baldwin, July the 9th, 1675' and 'James Baldwin, His Booke, March 31 1692' (ink inscriptions to front free endpaper).
