Title: A Book on Angling, Being a Complete Treatise on the Art of Angling in Every Branch with Explanatory Plates, etc. Author: Francis, Francis Place London Publisher: Longmans, Green & Co. Date: 1867 Description: xiii, [3], 472, [2] & 32 ad pp. Illustrated with 15 engraved plates, 5 of them hand-colored, of fishing tackle & flies; plus a steel-engraved frontispiece. 7¾x4¾, original blind-stamped dark mauve cloth, spine lettered in gilt. Second Edition, revised and much enlarged. Francis was angling editor of The Field for 25 years, and according to James Robb (Notable Angling Literature), this was his best book: "For almost twenty years, Francis collected his material; he visited and fished nearly every river of note in the kingdom in search of information. The tangible result was a comprehensive manual... dealing with every known branch of fresh-water angling and set out in a practical and concentrated form." See Westwood & Satchell p. 98. Lot Amendments Condition: Spine sunned, ends frayed, corners bumped, minor rubbing; hinges tender, light foxing; else very good. Item number: 169130
