Beschreibung:

A Large Blue and White Tripod Incense Burner and Cover, the globular body rising from three cabriole legs to a cylindrical neck, set with a pair of upright curved handles each pierced with a rectangular aperture, decorated with two dragons vying among clouds for a 'flaming pearl', the reticulated cover is surmounted with a foo-dog finial, Qing dynasty, 18th century, height c. 37 cm; wear, one repaired foot, glaze cracks, firing defects PROVENANCE: The private collection of Gösta and Märta Rashammar Purchased in Stockholm, Sweden, 1968 NOTE: The incense burner was most likely the centrepiece for a five-piece altar garniture, flanked by a pair of candlesticks and 'gu' vases. This censer is of 'ding' form, based on the shape of archaic ritual vessels of the Shang dynasty, its cauldron-like shape supported on three curved legs reflect the predilection in the Qing dynasty for vessels in the form of archaic bronzes. The Qianlong emperor had a keen interested in Buddhism and during his reign various temples were built throughout the empire for which such garnitures were produced.
