A blue and white ewer and cover, in archaistic he-form, the sides painted in vivid underglaze-blue with the bajixiang (´Eight Buddhist Emblems´) amidst luxuriant lotus flowers, the domed cover surmounted by a raised loop knop and similarly decorated as the rest of the vessel, with continous lingzhi scroll, the underside of the vessel inscribed with a six-character seal mark in underglaze-blue, Qianlong mark and period (1736-1795), label from the collection of Oscar Björck height 22.5 cm; feet with natural wear, small firing defects, one foot with possibly ground down nick HISTORY: These vessels were produced in the Qing dynasty to imitate the Zhou bronze prototype, due to the imperial court´s predilection for ancient objects. Excavations show that the "he" was used as a vessel for diluting wine, although such Qing imitations were most likely used for decorative, rather than practical purposes. PROVENANCE: From the collection of the swedish painter and professor, Oscar Björck (1860-1929). He was also a close friend of the swedish royal family. LITERATURE: Compare with Sotheby´s catalogue, "Fine chinese ceramics and works of art", Hong Kong, 10 April 2006, lot 1685 Compare with Sotheby´s catalogue, "Fine chinese ceramics and works of art", Hong Kong, 27 April 2003, lot 227 Changes Qianlongs märke och troligtvis period Qianlong mark and probably period
