Beschreibung:

A 16th-century book published during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I of England, and King Charles IX of France; just 25 years after the death of King Henry VIII; published in 1572, the year that Harrow School was founded, and the year in which Ben Jonson was born: 'Histories Tragiques' (tragic stories), fourth part, by Francois de Belleforest (1530-1583) - prolific French author, poet and translator of the Renaissance. He translated and adapted the 'tragic stories' from the Italian Matteo Bandello; one of these tales might be the source for William Shakespeare's 'Hamlet'. Published in Paris, 1572, 'Avec Privilege Du Roy' (with the permission of the King). Laid/chain-lined paper with occasional woodcut vignettes. Early vellum binding, 12cm (height). The book comes with an Edwardian letter addressed to S. C. Watson Esq, Edgbaston: 'I have returned to you to-day the copy of Belleforest Histoire Tragique. I am very greatly obliged to you for allowing me to have a look at this; as I have already mentioned to you on several occasions I have tried to get to see a copy but never yet succeeded'. There is also a vintage Sotheby's sticker attached to the bag in which the book has been stored.
