The oblong Photo Albums measure 10 x 12 3/4 inches. Each album unpaginated with varying number of pages and containing differing numbers of photographs and ephemera from the trip [fuller listing of volumes and contents available upon request]. Each album has stiff card stock covers and is tied with silk cord. Also included are a number of loose pieces of ephemera, photographic prints, 37 Belgian newspaper clippings (French-language) from Thévenet’s published reports of his travels, mostly focused on the Caribbean (including Miami), Mexico, and the South Pacific legs of his travels, and a series of 2 cards upon which the compiler of the photo albums listed their plan for scrap-booking the images of the journey. This archive includes more than 450 photographs documenting Jean Gaston Antoine Thévenet’s train trip through the continental United States, 1936. Thévenet was a lawyer at the Court of Appeals of Brussells, who took a trip through much of the world during 1934 - 1936. Thévenet published accounts of his travels in the Belgian newspaper La Libre Belgique. Thévenet left the port of Le Havre in 1934, travelled to the Caribbean, Mexico, and then on to the Pacific, including the South Pacific Islands, New Zealand (some of his pictures are held in the National Library of New Zealand), then up the East Coast of Asia, including Hong Kong, Japan, and thence to Victoria, British Columbia, where his travels continued by train through Seattle, San Francisco, Los Angeles, El Paso, Chicago, and New York, from where he returned via the S. S. Normandie to Le Havre. Interspersed with the photographs are picture postcards, menu cards, maps, souvenir booklets, and printed ephemera. When in El Paso, Thévenet stopped by to visit Lyman W. Hoffedker, an El Paso entrepreneur who made a fortune furnishing Belgian-made windows to important department stores throughout the American Southwest and Northern Mexico. Photographs of Hoffedker’s home, the first in El Paso with an indoor swimming pool, are included in album 92. Photo album 97 contains significant documentation of the ship Normandie. Lot Amendments Condition: Varying degrees of edge wear to the edges of the covers, some of the covers are breaking down with age, especially along the hinges. Could use some professional archival restoration and / or re-housing, as some of the corner mounts are loose. Item number: 254962
