Amsterdam]. The collection of L.C. SCHADE VAN WESTRUM, consisting of 1797 (col./ real photogr.) picture postcards, mainly between 1895-1930, loosely inserted in 21 ringbound albums. - All picture postcards are in fine condition. = A fascinating tour through Amsterdam as it was at the beginning of 20th century, alphabetically and thematically ordered by the collector L.C. Schade van Westrum (1923-1998), author of i.a. Groeten uit Amsterdam. Prentbriefkaarten uit grootvader's album, and editor of and contributor (on picture postcards) to Ons Amsterdam). He began collecting these picture postcards in the years after the war, and when it became a serious occupation for him, he was virtually the only collector in the field. He subsequently spent almost all of his adult life putting together this magnificent "panorama in picture postcards" of the myriad streets and alleys of Amsterdam, branching out from its ancient centre into the newly built late 19th and early 20th century city districts. Albums 1-14 contain the postcards of the alleys and streets, album 15 the cards of the villages that were part of greater Amsterdam, album 16 the views of harbours and hotels, album 17 covers the churches, album 18 the museums, album 19 shows the various stations, album 20 the orphanages and album 21 the hospitals. Many of the streets, squares and alleys are shown from all sorts of angles and locations. Album 14 contains a separate section labeled "Straatleven" and contains 48 picture postcards that show the daily hustle and bustle on Amsterdam streets in the city centre, including the streets surrounding the Waterlooplein in which many of the Amsterdam Jews lived and worked. The 16 postcards of the series "Momentopname uit het Amsterdamsche Straatleven" give a lively impression of this area of Amsterdam, i.a. "Bij Saartje de fruitvrouw"; "Nakijk, nakijk"; ""Kikki", de "Kargadoor" van den brug bij de Reestraat"; "Schillen! Schillen! Jan de schilleboer"; "In de Atax"; "Paraplu een kwartjee!!"; "De Boekhandelaar op de Nieuwmarkt"; "Donker Amsterdam"; "De Lijfwacht van Naatje op den Dam"; "Een Kijkje in de Jordaan - Een buurpraatje"; "Dekschaleeee!!"; "In den Jodenhoek", "Levendige Ling""; the same can be said of the 10 postcards of the series "Volksleven Amsterdam", i.a. "'t Uiltje"; "Levende Garnalen"; "De allemans gading"; "De Vinkenkoopman"; "De overhaal"; "Hein de poetser"; "Diaconimannetje"; "Scharensliep" and "Middagrust". Also includes two of the series of 8 picture postcards by J.M. Schalekamp showing Jewish streetvendors (numb. E81 and E85) and 2 postcards published by Louis Diefenthal. Among the portraits of famous street-figures of Amsterdam, a series of six postcards showing the notorious clochard an
