67 5436 Piranesi G B 1720 1778 67/5436 Piranesi, G.B. (1720-1778). Lot of 9 etchings, from Della Magnificenza ed Architettura de' Romani (publ. 1761), ±37x23,5 cm. (7x)/ ±40x61 cm. (2x, double-p.), all but 1 w. "Piranesi F." - Plate XXXVII yellowed; some smaller prints sl. yellowed/ trifle foxed in blank margins. = Tab. I (Studies of the substructure op the Capitoline Hill), II (The mouth, or outlet, of the Cloaca maxima [the great drain] into the Tiber), III (Plan, section and elevation of the Cloaca Maxima), XXIII, XXIV (both showing three diagrams of Doric temple construction), XXXI (Le Roy's Greek columns compared with Etruscan and Roman examples), XXXV (Roman architectural details compared with Greek examples from Le Roy), XXXVI (Plan showing the location of the Circus Maximus) and XXXVII (Constructional details of entrance porch to a Tuscan temple (...)). In the 1750s, there was an increasing advocacy of Greek art and architecture as superior to those of Rome. Della Magnificenza is Piranesi's defence of Roman and Etruscan architecture and ornament, in particular directed against J.D. Le Roy's work Les Ruines des plus beaux monuments de la Grèce of 1758.
