THE MERCEDES-BENZ R107
When Mercedes redesigned its famed SL in 1971, there was a lot of equity behind it – after all, when the incomparable 300SL Coupe and Roadster were built fewer than 20 years before, they set the world on fire. The next-generation 230/250/280SL in 1963 brought Mercedes' sports car down to Earth, replacing both the incredible 300SL and four-cylinder 190SL.
For the next SL, Mercedes started with the chassis of the mid-size "W114/115" model and added the motors from the large "W116" S-Class. The result was a luxurious V8 Convertible that ended up being the longest passenger car series ever produced by Mercedes-Benz to date. Despite its age, the final iteration, the 560SL, remained a prized automotive status symbol and an iconic part of the brand's lineup.
THE MOTORCAR OFFERED
This highly original example of the timeless 560SL was completed at the Mercedes-Benz Works in January of 1987. Equipped for the US market, the SL was sold new by Foreign Motors Inc in Boston, Massachusetts. The original Maintenance Booklet documents service performed by various Mercedes-Benz dealer through 2003. Additional assorted records further document the maintenance performed on the car.
Today this 560SL presents in wonderful condition throughout. The stunning original livery of Diamond Blue Metallic over a Royal Blue leather interior and matching convertible top is retained, with the original interior intact and in beautiful condition. An aftermarket set of rear seats have been installed into the package shelf. Original preserved chrome and glass remains on the car. Joining Tom Ferrara's collection nine years ago, it is currently showing 62,831 miles on the odometer at time of cataloging. The CARFAX report indicates what appears to be a clerical error in the mileage reading during the 2020 New York inspection as the car has been largely stored and minimally driven since acquisition. The original Becker Grand Prix tape player remains in the dash, as does the First Aid kit, and original ID plates, decals and factory markings are noticeable everywhere.
Elegantly presented in the original livery, this is a high-quality Mercedes-Benz ideally suited for open top touring, with nearly all the power amenities as a modern car, yet with the elegance and style of the classic Mercedes-Benz SL.
