THE GRAN TURISMO HAWK
Studebaker became the first major American manufacturer to announce an all-new design after WW2 with the introduction of its 1947 range. Created by two of the greatest automobile stylists of all time - Raymond Loewy and Virgil Exner - the sensational new Studebakers featured truly next-level styling. When fashion moved on and Loewy's Studebaker looked dated, they turned to another famed architect of automobile design, Brooks Stevens for a revision. His Gran Turismo Hawk as evidenced here, at once revitalized the brand, with nods to Mercedes and Ford automobiles of its day, it was unquestionably individual and would run in production from 1962-1964.
THE MOTORCAR OFFERED
This Ermine White 1963 Gran Turismo Hawk was acquired in 2012 by the consignor - a Beverly Hills based surgeon - from a long-term Philadelphia/Delaware-based owner who had driven the car very little. The mission was to restore the Studebaker and gift it to his ailing German father, a welder who immigrated from communist Europe to America as a teenager with a love for all things American, including cars! However, as the restoration was started by Connor Motors Cars in Westchester PA, the consignors father passed, and the restoration was put on hold for 5 years, before recommissioning the rotisserie restoration that his father would have loved. The documented restoration caried out between 2017 and 2019 remained true to the car's original specifications except for adding an Edelbrock 4-barrel carburetor, fitting Vintage air conditioning and a Bluetooth radio. The wheels were widened to accept wider tires and a Hurst 4-speed shift mount was welded to the stock Studebaker shift knob. A fresh two-tone leather interior was fashioned which includes leather door cards and padded dash.
Sparingly used, the GT Hawk has only been shown a few times since restoration, most notably winning best prize at a Petersen Museum Cars & Coffee (2020) and as an entrant in the 2021 Quail Concours during Monterey car week and the 2022 San Marino Concours. The striking Studebaker is offered with a comprehensive history file including restoration records and owner's manuals.
