After a stay of some years he was appointed the King of Congo's ambassador to the Pope and to Philip II of Spain, to tell them of the Congo's need for missionaries, to show various specimens of minerals, and to offer the Portuguese the advantages of free trade. On his return he was shipwrecked off the American coast (of Venezuela) and spent a year there before reaching home... Pigafetta had orders to collect all the information he could from Lopez concerning the Congo and other parts of Africa. The result was this work, which up to the middle of the 19th century was one of the chief sources for authentic information concerning central Africa" (Cox). - "It has been suggested that the narrative was used by Daniel Defoe for his Captain Singleton " (Howgego). - Die schönen Kupfer zeigen eine Palmenart, ein Zebra und Kostüme. Die beiden oft fehlenden Karten zeigen den Congo und den afrikanischen Kontinent mit Ausnahme des Gebietes westlich von Djerba im Norden und Fernando Póo im Süden. Beide Karten nicht bei Betz, The Mapping of Africa; die zweite ist abgebildet bei Bagrow, History of Cartography, Taf. XCVIII und in Bagrow/Skelton, Meister der Kartographie, Taf. XCVIII. - Von der 1591 datierten Congo-Karte ist nur der linke Teil erhalten (ca. 44:13 cm, knitterig und mit Einrissen), während die 1590 datierte, von Natale Bonifacio gestochene Afrika-Karte komplett erhalten und in ausgezeichnetem, kräftigem Abdruck vorliegt (knapp beschnitten aber noch mit schmalem w. Rand, 2 längere Einrisse unten sowie einige kürzere Einrisse u. eine Quetschfalte in den Faltstellen). Insgesamt leicht gebräunt u. stockfl., Ränder stellenw. angenagt u. mit Wasserfl., Einband ohne die 4 Bindebänder, Rücken mit kl. Wurmgang. - Beiliegt ein alt teilkolor. Kupferst. aus De Bry (1598 od. etw. später; S. 9) mit Darst. des Zebras (nach Pigafetta).
