The first edition of Audubon's Ornithological Biography, written to accompany the Double Elephant Folio; it contains close to 500 accounts, often referred to as "bird biographies", of the characteristics, diet, habits and habitats of each of the species illustrated in the Double Elephant Folio. Bound into the back of volume one is the very rare 16-page Prospectus (in Fries' version E), for the Birds of America proper. Dated 1831, the Prospectus outlines the scope of the project, its progress to date, including excerpts from favorable reviews, and also includes the current list of subscribers. Lacking half-titles to volumes one to three, some slight soiling and foxing throughout, some occasional slight damage to margins, volumes four and five untrimmed and somewhat larger. Volumes one to three bound in modern half calf with lettering-piece to spine, volumes four and five in late-19th century cloth with titles to spine embossed in gold, all bindings with partial use of original material, front endpapers with bookplate of the Belfast Library, library stamp and manuscript shelf-mark, further library stamps to title-page of volume four.
