The first three volumes have 176-200 numbered pages. The increasingly large ad and appendix pages at the rear were numbered after 1947, making up to 350 total pages. As in the earlier volumes listed in this sale, there were hundreds of graphic examples, with Depression and wartime austerity beginning to fade with a gradual return to the Art Deco tradition of color plates. Spanning the World War II and first post-war years, the wartime volumes included domestic and foreign propaganda posters (one anti-Japanese piece written in Arabic). The artists for these years included many established names - Alajalov, Artzybasheff, Binder, Bobri, Carlu, Covarrubias, Dali, Rockwell Kent Norman Rockwell Steichen, Steig, Arno, Cornwell, Rand, N.C.Wyeth, Kauiffer, Refregier, Bemelmans, Cassandre. Some new names were well-known artists not notable for commercial art like Marie Laurencin and Lynd Ward The color barrier was broken by Asian-Americans like Mine Okubo, Gyo Fujilkawa and Dong Kingman and African-American Horace Pippin Other newcomers included Arthur Szyk, Al Capp Rube Goldberg Andre Durenceau, Cecil Beaton, Saul Steinberg William Pene DuBois, Grandma Moses Ralphael Soyer, Andrew Wyeth Al Hirschfeld and Ben Shahn Perhaps the most interesting additions were photographers Phil[ippe] Halsman, Paul Outerbridge Andre Kertesz, Yousef Karsh and Richard Avedon - a tribute to the increasing use of photography in the "modern" advertising era.
