The Lithuanian-born artist Rahel Szalit-Marcus (1894-1942) depicted Eastern European Jewish life. Fleeing from Berlin to Paris did not save her life from the Nazis; she was arrested and murdered in Auschwitz in 1942. The present work forms illustrations to Sholem Aleichem's (sometimes called the Jewish Mark Twain) last novel Motl, Peysi the Cantor's Son.
