Beschreibung:

Title: 2 Woodburytype photographs of Jules Verne, “Father of Science Fiction”, 1877-1884 Author: Place: Publisher: Date: 1877 - 1884 Description: 3.5 x 4.5” cut oval image (probably by Adam-Salomon) on roughly trimmed backing paper, ca. 1877; and 3.25 x 4.75” rectangular image by Carjat, pasted on to the front cover of the periodical Paris-Artiste, 2nd year, Number 11 (Photoglyptie Goupil, Paris, 1884) The complete issue of 4pp., 10.5 x 14.5”, taped at spine. The first was probably cut from a copy of “Men of Mark”, 2nd Series, a biographic “Gallery of Contemporary Portraits”, (London,1877) with photos of “distinguished” writers, soldiers, clergymen and statesmen, all British except for Verne, Victor Hugo and Gustave Dore. The second is more scarce, the Paris-Artiste issue being devoted to Verne, with French text by Albert Clennes which focused on the writer’s aspirations as a dramatist – contrasting his unsuccessful 1882 fantasy play, “Voyage Through The Impossible”, with the popular novels of his “Extraordinary Voyages” series (which included Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, Journey to the Center of the Earth, and From the Earth to the Moon.) On the back page is an ad for a set of the complete works of Jules Verne in 23 volumes. Lot Amendments Condition: In very good condition; Paris-Artiste periodical is taped at spine. Item number: 247634
