Beschreibung:

2 vol., 190 hand-coloured engraved plates on 187 leaves, (including one duplicate, so lacking one plate), many heightened in gold, some light soiling and foxing throughout, one plate with margin repaired and restored, unobtrusive old embossed library stamp to titles and several other text ff. throughout, modern blue half morocco, gilt, [Fine Bird Books p. 73; Nissen IVB, 47; Anker 14], 4to, Paris, 1802. *** "Its plates, heightened with gold, and so finished that they are little less than hand-illuminated engravings, make this one of the most beautiful books of its era. It is the gold reflections of the plumage that render the book unique and wonderful" (Fine Bird Books). The subjects include the most spectacular species of hummingbirds, jacamars and birds of paradise. As Anker points out the "colors of the birds and their handsome appearance have evidently been the cause of their selection for inclusion in the book. The plates with the bird portraits are in beautiful colors; in this respect they are among the best color prints found in ornithology." The work was issued in 32 parts over 26 months and is divided into 10 sections or sub-sections, the general title being taken from the half-titles. Audebert died in the middle of publication and the work was continued by Viellot.
