5 pp.+ docketing notes. Autograph Document Signed ordering the sale of Gus and Scott, two slaves owned by James W. Irwin, to satisfy his $1000+ debt to George W. Norton. By court order, the Sheriff “took into his possession” the two slaves (a third was not arrested) and jailed them until they could be sold at auction “at the Court House door for cash in hand to the highest and best bid.” Scott was bought by Hummer Eli Orndorff for $831 and Gus was bought by Peter Peacher for $720. The total amount realized - minus the sheriff’s commission and jailer’s fee - satisfied Irwin’s debt. Both of the buyers would serve in the Confederate Cavalry.
