9.5" clip point bowie blade with 4.25" false edge, 1.875" wide in front of the choil. Coffin handle with stag grip scales secured by pins, a German silver escutcheon plate on left side and a 3.5" German silver cross guard. Reverse ricasso marked in four lines: G. WOSTENHOLM & SON / WASHINGTON WORKS / NONE ARE GENUINE BUT THOSE / MARKED I*XL. Reverse of blade marked above the median ridge: G. WOSTENHOLM & SON / WASHINGTON WORKS. Reverse etched with a gold gilt legend that reads: I AM THE CONQUERING HERO in a flowing foliate panel. The reverse blade is further engraved with an American Eagle followed by I*XL and a banner that reads THE REAL I*XL KNIFE. Knife is accompanied by a German silver mounted scabbard with embossed gold gilt board decorations on both the front and back, and the legend I*XL in the center of the obverse. These knives were assembled in the 20th century using a stock of 19th century blades. Condition: Very fine. Blade retains most of the original bright factory polish with some scattered minor surface scuffs and scratches as well as some milky discoloration on the obverse of the blade. The gilt panel remains almost entirely intact and all markings remain completely legible. Grips fine, scabbard near fine, with some light scuffing and minor loss to the embossed gilt decorations, frog stud secured by tape.
