Bentley's 1980s resurgence had hitherto relied exclusively on models whose basic architecture was shared with other Rolls-Royce products, but on display at Geneva in '85 was 'Project 90': a mocked-up coupé styled by Messrs John Heffernan and Ken Greenley, which was intended to gauge public response to the idea of a high-performance car unique to Bentley. When the real thing - the Bentley Continental R - was unveiled six years later, the waiting crowd burst into spontaneous applause. Again the work of Heffernan and Greenley, the Continental R benefited from computer-aided design and wind tunnel testing in the devising of its sleekly streamlined shape. Despite the need to incorporate non-traditional features such as doors recessed into the roof, the result looked every bit a Bentley, albeit one restated for the 1990s. Also new was the gearbox, a four-speed automatic with 'overdrive' top ratio, but the main focus of interest was the newcomer's performance. Needless to say, this was outstanding, the combination of the Turbo R V8 engine in the new wind-cheating shape cutting the 0-60mph time to 6.2 seconds and boosting top speed to in excess of 150mph. Costing nearly £200,000 when new, the Bentley Continental R was the world's most expensive production car at that time.
One of only 1,335 built, this Continental R was first registered on 16th June 1994 and ordered in the rare colour combination of Aurora Green pearlescent paint with beige leather wood-trimmed interior. With only 49,125 miles on the odometer, the car is ready to stretch it legs for the next owner. There is an impressive service file documenting routine work carried out together with other works outside of regular servicing. The original service book has been stamped 17 times and is up to date. The car appears to have been off the road for a few years from 2016, and in 2021 was subject to a major mechanical recommission which included mechanical parts, suspension, brakes, engine, brake and fuel lines, and five new Avon tyres, all at a cost of just over £10,000. All the recommissioning was carried out by Bentley specialist Paul York; the car is thus right up to date and wanting for nothing. Its overall condition can be described as good, with the bodywork having no rust or dents and being recently put through a two-stage machine polish to give the paint some extra gloss. The interior is also in great shape with no rips or tears while retaining that evocative leather smell forever associated with Bentley. As far as we have been able to tell, all switches and accessories work, including the stereo and the two-phone system.
