THE PORSCHE 930 TURBO
Porsche's most iconic model, the long-running 911 sports car first appeared at the 1963 Frankfurt Show as the '901', but shortly after production commenced in 1964, it was renamed as the '911'. The preceding Type 356's rear-engine layout was retained but the 911 switched to unitary construction for the bodyshell and dropped the 356's VW-based suspension in favor of a more modern McPherson strut and trailing arm arrangement. In its first incarnation, Porsche's single-overhead-camshaft, air-cooled flat six engine displaced 1,991cc and produced 130bhp; progressively enlarged and developed, it would eventually grow to more than 3.0 liters and, in turbo-charged form, put out well over 300 horsepower.
Group 4 homologation rules, which required 400 road cars to be built, led to the formation of 'Project 930' – the legendary 911 Turbo. Production began in April of 1975; the Turbo married a KKK turbocharger to the 3.0-liter RSR engine; in road trim a combination that delivered 260bhp for a top speed of 155mph. As impressive as this was there was more to the Turbo than just top speed, it was also the best-equipped 911 and amazingly flexible - hence only four speeds in the gearbox - being capable of racing from a standstill to 100mph in 14 seconds.
Borrowing the flared wheel arches and 'tea tray' rear spoiler from the Carrera model, the Turbo made them renowned. Incorporating the most luxurious interior yet seen in a 911, the Turbo featured leather upholstery, air conditioning, and electric windows. The Turbo's engine was enlarged to 3.3 liters for 1978, gaining an inter-cooler in the process; power increased to 300bhp and the top speed of what was the fastest-accelerating road car of its day went up to 160mph. More refined and offering better performance than its predecessor, the Turbo sold in the thousands, becoming the definitive sports car of its age.
THE MOTORCAR OFFERED
This 930 Turbo was built new for the US market in March of 1986. Finished in Guards Red over Black full leather, options selected included driver and passenger electrically adjusted sport seats, leather sports steering wheel, alarm, Blaupunkt Monterey cassette radio, and power sunroof. The first owner is not recorded but was clearly an enthusiast as he or she optioned to collect the car from the factory. Curiously, the interior, which appears to be largely original, is trimmed in Cashmere leather but this conflicts with the 'VD' trim code on the frunk lid label.
In New York by the early 1990s, the penultimate owner acquired the car in 1994, with under 10,000 original miles. An exacting, Long Island-based Porsche nut, the Turbo is reported to only have been used on sunny days and never in the winter. Meticulous records document his careful ownership of the car. Over the course of ownership the Turbo was sympathetically updated with a Sony CD-player head unit and frunk mounted autochanger (at a rate of $3,000 in 1995), a 930 S steering wheel, Ruf wheels (17 inches in diameter all around, eight inches wide up front and nine inches wide at the back), a DP Motorsport front spoiler with oil cooler, 1.0 BAR boost spring, stainless steel dual sport exhaust, European H4 headlights, and lowered suspension to European specifications. Regular service by AutoSport Designs in Huntington Station, New York is evidenced by receipts from 1994 to 2007.
Acquired by the current owner in May of 2007, a mere 13 miles have been added to the odometer in the past 15 years, bringing the total to 63,494 miles from new. Given the long-term limited use, mechanical recommissioning is recommended prior to any proper use. Once serviced, this road rocket will undoubtably provide many happy miles. Eligible for any number of events, including the Rams Horn Rally, New England 1000, Mountain Mille, and Texas 1000, it is equally suited to the back roads as it is to the front lot of your local fine eatery.
