"If there is one company that epitomizes Britain, and British industry, it is Rolls-Royce. There can be no name more revered or better known throughout the world. So the launch of a new Rolls-Royce is an event of great interest to the world at large; the launch of the Silver Spirit is of even greater interest to Rolls-Royce themselves, for it replaces the Silver Shadow which has hitherto accounted for the vast majority of Rolls-Royce sales. The Silver Spirit (and its variants, the long-wheelbase Silver Spur and Bentley Mulsanne) is as important to Rolls-Royce's future as has been any Rolls-Royce car of the past." - Motor magazine, October 4th 1980. Typically Rolls-Royce in so far as it represented evolution rather than revolution, the Silver Spirit was based on the preceding Silver Shadow II to which it bore a distinct family resemblance. The Shadow's floorpan was retained and powertrain differences were minimal, the Spirit's chief advance over its immediate forebear being the heavily revised and improved type of rear suspension that had first appeared on the company's two-door models. "Unlike the Shadow which, while cosseting you in luxury and comfort, required a good deal of concentration to drive quickly, the Spirit is endowed with enough feel and response, matched with stability, to make driving on all types of road a real pleasure," declared Motor. Purchased by the vendor from the original owner about ten years ago and has been extremely sparingly driven. Carefully stored in a climate controlled garage, this nicely present Rolls has traveled less than 25,800 miles from new and is now ready to ferry its new owners in wood-lined, leather trimmed comfort.
