M1 development was contracted to Lamborghini and Giugiaro, with assembly by the respected German coachbuilder, Baur, the M1’s build quality guaranteed, customer versions finished to a high level, including air conditioning. Infinitely more reliable than their Italian supercar rivals, there was no more stylish or comfortable way to travel at 160+ mph with 60mph in 5.5 seconds, impressive even today. Giugiaro’s compact bodywork encompassed a multi-tubular spaceframe chassis, while a twin-cam, 24-valve 3,453cc version of BMW’s classic straight-six engine driving via a five-speed ZF transaxle provided the power. Shown in 1978 at the Paris Motor Show, the M1 came with 277bhp and 243lb/ft torque and a top speed of 163mph/260kph. 456 examples were built, a minimum of 400 being required for homologation to the proposed ‘Silhouette Formula’. In the event, the M1-only Procar Series was run at Grand Prix races in 1980/1, providing BMW Motorsport with a valuable showcase alongside their success with Brabham in Formula One, a relationship which produced Grand Prix wins and a World Championship. Purchased in 1998 at 53,224kms, MoTs date back to 1992 to 42,000kms, the speedo reading 62,020kms (38,762 miles) when viewed. Including a distinctive ‘BMW’ number plate, a Tracker and immobiliser system is also fitted. A large service history file to 1987 includes Munich Legends, L&C and Coombes of Guildford, plus a 1993 photographed engine rebuild by L & C Motors. Recently Waxoyled, parts bills from California for $3057 regard a gearbox rebuild in 1999/2000. Brake calipers were rebuilt in 2000, and wheel bearings replaced in 2001. This very well cared for M1 performed well on test, and comes with BMW handbook, BMW Repair Manual and Specifications, BMW Parts Catalogue, (BMW Workshop Manual and spare rear silencer exhaust box by negotiation), correct period Pioneer radio/cassette and graphic equalizer, Swansea V5, MoT until February 2004 and road licence.
