1975 ROLLS-ROYCE SILVER SHADOW Registration No. TBA Chassis No. SRH21246 Engine No. 21246 Burgundy with light brown leather interior. Engine: V8 overhead valve, cast aluminium alloy crank case and cylinder heads, 6,750cc; Gearbox: three speed automatic with torque convertor; Brakes: disc brakes all round; Suspension: fully independent with automatic hydraulic height control system. Right hand drive. The first cars built by Rolls-Royce with monocoque construction were the Silver Shadow and T-Series Bentley. The conventional chassis frame was replaced by a front sub assembly and a rear sub assembly for the back axle and suspension. Power was from the 6.2 litre, 8 cylinder, light alloy engine whilst other features such as hydraulic disc brakes and an improved power-assisted steering system ensured that the new model was mechanically very up to date. Although the car did not have any sporting pretentions it was still quite swift and, as always, accommodated four passengers in great comfort and style. Latterly, the engine displacement was increased to 6,750cc by lengthening the stroke, this extra power being partly absorbed by the refrigerator compressor system and emission control devices. This example is one of the later Series 1 models that has been in its present private ownership since July 1991. The car has been rarely used during this time and only taken out on high days and holidays, although has been mechanically serviced when necessary. It has been repainted and there are areas, on the roof and boot, which are showing signs of paint reaction and crazing; nevertheless, the panelwork and panel fit is all good and the car stands squarely. The interior has light brown leather upholstery and trim with rear head restraints fitted, rear foot rests and front and rear over-rugs. The mechanical specification appears to be in good order and the electrically operated front seats and electric windows all work. On a short drive the car behaved well, with no untoward noises from the suspension, and the power steering operated as it should. In April of this year the brake system was attended to, the final invoice amounting to £1,980. The Rolls-Royce has an MoT certificate valid until April 18th 1997 and, at the time of writing, the personal registration number was being transferred. These top-of-the-range motor cars offer exceptional value for money when one considers the price of a more mundane family saloon.
