Honda was responsible for establishing the reputation of the bullet proof 4-cylinder in-line engine. After introducing the concept during their successful foray into World Championship Grand Prix their brilliant engineer/designer, Mr Irimajiri, then went a dramatic step further in 1966 with an in-line 250cc six, the RC 166, later enlarged to 297cc, upon which Mike Hailwood became virtually unbeatable. Forty-five years down the road these exquisite 6-cylinder racers arguably remain in the mindset as road racing's most exotic machinery of all time [but not forgetting Moto Guzzi's temperamental V8], not only because of Honda's unique design but that spine-tingling sound when accelerating. As a youngster Hampshire's Terry Collingwood had witnessed the charismatic 6-cyl Honda in action, an event that planted a tiny seed, culminating some four decades later with the ownership of his very own home-constructed RC 166 Replica. It is an inspirational if tragic tale, for Terry was afflicted with a terminal illness, to which he sadly succumbed in March 2012. A cabinet-maker by trade he was equally skilled in metal craft and, over the years, prepared several racing machines on which he competed. Widely respected throughout the county for his fine workman-ship he nursed a burning ambition to build as close a duplicate as possible of Mike Hailwood's original RC 166; indeed, it became his final project. He was not by any means the first to venture along this path, for Honda's evocative multi-cylinder machines have long generated any number of copies, some far better executed than others! Fully aware the lack of a suitable six cylinder engine he duly purchased a pre-used CB400F. In early 2010, in his well-equipped workshop, he began the time-consuming challenge, knowing that at any moment he might be irrevocably curtailed by his medical condition. The exercise comprised two separate parts whereby the basic CB400F had to be brought up to pristine mechanical condition, followed by the more exciting task of sourcing and fabricating the many parts that would give the finished machine its authentic appearance. High standard one-off machines are invariably labours of love; in this instance the two-year construction period has been visually recorded stage by stage in a Honda Institute ring binder, on whose cover is inscribed the applicable comment: If it is difficult, it is worth doing!" It is fulfilling to record that Terry completed the Honda a fortnight before his untimely passing. There is a short video film on Youtube entitled Walking on a Dream in which the machine's builder is depicted warming the engine. From a clutch of superb fitments the machine's USP must surely be the beautifully made 6-pipe exhaust system, which, in addition to [so nearly] capturing the genuine sound, could have been made in Honda's own race shop. The file contains a quantity of relevant information, including a 4-page schedule of the outlay on parts, amounting in total to just over £7800.00. Offered with V5C.
