Ducati didn’t start making V Twin motorcycles until the early 1970’s although the single cylinder bikes had been successful on road and track especially the lager capacity models that featured the trade mark Desmodronic valves, however it was Paul Smarts famous win at Imola in 1972 that was the game changer for the Bologna manufacturer. In April 1970 chief designer Fabio Taglioni made the first sketches of the new Ducati V-twin, by July they had been turned into a running prototype and by August there was a complete motorcycle, Leopoldo Tartarini, the founder of Italjet refined the styling and in October the decision was made by Ducati to re enter motorcycle competition. The first race bikes produced featured a frame designed and built by Colin Seely, but as the first factory production 750GT bikes became available in June of 1971 the subsequent race bikes featured Ducati’s own frame design. The Imola winning bike was based on the production 750GT but obviously with race shop tweeks and it was this beautiful design that eventually led to the factory 750SS road bike that followed in 1972. Many club and privateer racers at the time followed suit and modified production 750 models into specials for road and track, inspection of this example has revealed that it has some of the hallmarks of being an ex race bike, the frame appears to be circa 1971 while the modified engine is 1973. Nevertheless it makes an interesting combination of a very fine looking bike. Having been imported to the UK in 2015 it has undergone some minor restoration work, the electronics re wired, new battery fitted and the 40mm Dellorto carbs overhauled and new chokes fitted. In addition the bike has received new exhausts, a full service and the fuel tank has recently been ethanol proofed. Now UK registered as EWV 311L, dated to 1973 the bike is supplied with a Ducati Club dating certificate, UK V5C and an MoT until Jan 2018. In generally very fine order and in great running condition this very handsome bike sounds and goes great currently showing 4,675 km. With values of genuine 750SS models now being completely out of reach for even the most avid of collectors this great Ducati is an opportunity to acquire a genuine early round case 750 for either road or track.
