Outwardly imilar to the preceding TR4A - the first TR sports car with independent rear suspension - but with Triumph’s 2.5-litre, six-cylinder engine installed in place of the old 2.1-litre four, the TR5 was produced for the 1968 model year only (October 1967 to November 1968) pending the arrival of the re-styled TR6. The bulk of production was built in TR250 export trim, with twin Stromberg carburettors to meet US emissions requirements. The current owner acquired this TR250 upon its repatriation from San Diego, California in 1995 and commenced its restoration in 1998. Straight and virtually rust free, the car was stripped back to bare metal following the removal of the wings, engine, wiring loom, interior, etc, and refinished with two-pack paint in original Signal Red. Voids in the ’shell and chassis, undersides of wings, etc, were protected with ‘stone chip’ or Waxoyl as appropriate. The bodyshell remained on the chassis throughout as no repairs/welding was necessary to the chassis or floor pan. There were two coin-sized holes in the near-side rear wing which were plated and braze filled on the restorers’ advice. As far as the vendor is aware, these are the only areas of paint blistering or noticeable damage on the vehicle. The bodyshell and chassis are totally original: no parts have been replaced. The vehicle was converted from left to right-hand drive and reassembled with a new clutch and wiring loom. All perished rubber components were replaced and a new interior fitted. The seat frames, sourced from Triumph specialists Rimmer Bros, were re-sprung and re-upholstered with new foam filling and seat covers, the latter being fitted earlier this year. The rear windscreen and hardtop were sourced from TR Shop, London, restored and fitted. The original steel wheels were sold to the racing fraternity and a set of five Minilite replicas fitted in 2004. Equipped with the desirable overdrive gearbox, the car is offered with restoration invoices, current road fund licence, MoT to February 2006 and Swansea V5.
