This striking Alfa Romeo Giulia GTA is documented as the car in which popular bespectacled Italian racing driver and future Ferrari and Alfa Romeo T33 sports-prototype star Andrea de Adamich won the 1967 European Touring Car Challenge Championship title for Alfa Romeo’s quasi-works Autodelta team. During that momentous season de Adamich proved to be Alfa Romeo’s spearhead contender in the very well supported European Challenge, winning outright in the Limburg Cup race at Zolder, the RAC Tourist Trophy in England, the Budapest Grand Prix around a city park in the Hungarian capital and in the Dutch qualifying round alongside the North Sea beaches at Zandvoort. Records show that chassis ‘AR*613898’ left Alfa Romeo on 15th February 1967 and was registered under the number ‘MI D55662’ to Autodelta on 31st March, the purchase price noted as L. 2,995,000. In October 1969 it was re-registered ‘MI H65175’, still in the name of Autodelta, and this is the number it still bears today. We understand that this GTA had its wheel arches flared in the later 1960s to accommodate ever broader wheels and tyres, while it is accompanied in this Sale by a history file showing race results and ownerships. From Autodelta the car was sold in March 1970, then being acquired by Mussa of Turin (who repainted it white to reflect his milk business), and from that ownership passing direct to the current vendor. The twin plug engine was rebuilt as new by Almo Bosato some years ago, and the car has been unused since completion of that work. The bodywork and interior condition is characterized as being “original” apart from the addition of a period oil pressure gauge. The rev counter reads to a full 12,000rpm and the engine is equipped with magnesium cam covers and sump, and breathes through two 45mm Weber twin-choke carburettors with intake trumpets. This GTA features 13-inch diameter wheels and Michelin tyres and is of course fitted with an Autodelta sliding-block rear end. These lightweight, raucous, agile and very fast competition touring cars are extremely exciting and rewarding to drive. There is an extremely active Historic touring car racing scene in which they can be campaigned as they were in their heyday, and this Alfa Romeo GTA is a most attractive example of its type, with a very important associated history.
