Designed by Fabio Taglioni, the first Ducati overhead-camshaft single appeared in 1955. Small capacity lightweights were produced initially, the first OHC 250cc roadster not arriving until 1961. Successful production racers in their day (importer/entrant Vic Camp enjoyed numerous success with these bikes in the UK) Ducati singles have in recent years become a mainstay of classic or ‘vintage’ racing. Suitably modified versions are highly competitive in the right hands and indeed, Ducatis filled the top three positions in the UK Classic Racing Motorcycle Club’s ‘European 250’ Class in 2004. The vendor informs us that this example had already been converted for racing when he acquired it a few years ago, though none of its prior history is known. Not raced while in the present ownership, it comes with the engine freshly rebuilt with all new seals, bearings, gaskets, piston, cylinder and liner (stock 74mm bore). We are advised that the engine appears to be fairly standard and that it runs well. All the components are reported as period upgrades except for the Works Performance rear dampers, while other noteworthy features include new race-compound Avon tires, Veglia tachometer and Vic Camp-style bodywork, all said to be in really good shape. A potentially competitive entry-level 250 ‘vintage’ racer at a bargain price.
