The resplendence of the Phantom V was precisely in the tradition of Rolls-Royce's great carriages, destined to convey Heads of State, Ambassadors and captains of industry on formal occasions. it was unveiled late in 1959, replacing the straight-eight Phantom IV and long wheelbase six-cylinder Silver Wraith. It was equipped with an advanced 6.3 litre light alloy vee-eight engine in a chassis and running gear derived from that of the Silver Cloud II but lengthened by 22 inches. After three years the bonnet line and radiators was lowered and four headlamps replaced the previous twin-lamp layout. Initially, the Phantom V was offered with bespoke seven-seater full limousine and landaulette coachwork by such great names as Hooper, HJ Mulliner, Park Ward and James Young as on this car, but in later years this became limited to those of Rolls-Royce-controlled Mulliner and Park Ward. Rolls Royce's own engineers maintained stricter control than ever over dimensions and overall weight, for with an overall length of some 20 ft and weighing 2.75 tons, the Phantom V proved to be capable of speeds in excess of 100 mph in total silence when tested by The Motor . This majestic limousine demanded much of its brakes and was provided with a powerful dual circuit drum system that has proven to be well up to its task. Delivered in 1968, this exceptional Phantom V retains the original James Young coachwork maintenance book recording its specification, which today it adheres to entirely. Finished in Black over garnet livery, details included twin radios to front and rear compartments, electric division and air-conditioning. Remarkably the original layout cards for the positioning of the instruments, radios, controls, air-conditioning controls and design of the division vent, are also with the car. In the present ownership since 1978, this very original and excellent example has always been chauffeur driven and garaged professionally, whilst its mileage has risen to just over 30,420. The condition throughout reflects careful use, and the interior both cloth and leather show little wear. Offered with its original Rolls-Royce manual, handbooks for the radios, and a current MoT, this low mileage coachbuilt Limousine, can be highly recommended.
