1961 LOTUS ELITE FACTORY BUILT SPECIAL EQUIPMENT MODEL Registration No. 2474 MM Chassis No.EB 1626 Engine No 9356 Unpainted with red interior Engine: Coventry Climax FWE, 1,216cc, approx 85bhp at 6,100rpm; Gearbox: four speed ZF close ratio manual; Brakes: discs all round, inboard at rear; Suspension: front, independent by wishbone, combined coil spring, shock absorber, anti-roll bar, rear, Chapman strut coil spring shock absorber, trailing arm. Right hand drive. When the Lotus Elite was unvieled at the 1957 Earl's Court Motor Show, it was conceptually miles ahead of its time. Colin Chapman's fascination with fiberglass reinforced resin as a potential structural material, combined with a conviction that seperation of chassis and bodyshell was a waste of weight, resulted in a wonderfully simple and effective conclusion. The shell/chassis was created in just three moulds and only minimal subframes were utilised at high load impact points. Combined with fully independent suspension including the Chapman strut, all round disc brakes and the solid though free revving all alloy Climax engine, the car was very fast, but most of all had amazing handling abilities. They were highly suitable for competition work and a small example of their success was five consecutive class wins at Le Mans from 1959 until 1964. This Special Equipment version with its twin SU carburettors and ZF gearbox is very much a restoration project. It was driven into the barn where it is currently stored around 8 years ago. The paint has already been stripped from the bodywork. The engine was fully rebuilt by Tony Mantle of Climax engine services in the late 1970s and was barely used before the car was laid up. The door trims have been removed from the car, but are available, as are the bumpers one of which is quite dented. It is thought the wiper blades and bonnet badge are missing. The PL headlamps are also with the vehicle. The wire wheels and exhaust are quite rusty and it is known that the fuel tank will require replacing. The current owner purchased the Elite around 1970 and it is thought it may have done a little competion work during the 1960s. There are of course a number of specialist firms and a thriving Elite club who could help and advise on the restoration of this rediscovered 60s classic. NO RESERVE
