Right hand drive The Bentley S2 was the high-performance version of the Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud, which had gained a brand-new 6.2 litre V8 engine in 1959; the Continental was the higher performance version of the Bentley, which came with power-steering and hydromechanical power-assisted brakes. Thus this car was, in its day, a very much state of the art up-market sporting machine, and most rewarding to drive. The heart of this excellent model is an engine of General Motors design, 4.1in. bore by 3.6in. stroke with push-rod operated overhead valves, which drives through an automatic four speed gearbox also by GM. The power output of the engine is said to be in the region of 230bhp, which gives a speed on the road in excess of 110mph. The brakes are operated by large drums, activated by the Hispano-type gearbox- driven servo, and 8.20 x 18in. tyres are fitted. The S2 is often thought by Bentley afficionados to be the "best buy" of the S-series; the S1 is handsome but lacks power, and the S3 gained an extra pair of headlights, which may have done wonders for the night driver, but which do little if anything to add to the car's elegance. The example was supplied new through Jack Barclay Ltd. for the use of Dr. S. Leonard Simpson, being delivered on July 24, 1961. Originally in velvet green, with grey upholstsery, the car was first registered 9 CXE. In the present ownership for three years, the Flying Spur has at some stage been repainted to the current light blue metallic, and the interior refurbished in red. The dashboard has been re-veneered recently and is in good condition, and the brakes have received attention. An older restoration, the general appearance of the car is good although small areas of surface corrosion are visible. When inspected by a Christie's representative the car drove well, though it was noted that the rev counter was not operative, and it was thought that the car would benefit from more regular use. The Bentley is sold with a current MoT and copies of the original build sheets which include the coachbuilder's notes.
