Left hand drive. Although it closely resembled its predecessor, the Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud II when introduced in September 1959, was the beginning of a new era for the famous Crewe company. Answering the demands for greater power, particularly in the face of increasingly larger-engined American rivals, Rolls-Royce had designed an all-new light alloy 6,230cc V8 for the Cloud. This had a dramatic effect on the car's performance as top speed was now up to 115mph (having previously been a little over 100mph) and was accompanied by the kind of acceleration only a big-engined sports car could equal. Incredibly, all was achieved with hardly any increase in fuel consumption. It was an engine at the beginning of its life, fit to be refined, tuned and developed as Rolls-Royce knew so well how to do. Road-tested by The Motor , a standard wheelbase Silver Cloud II notched up a two-way average of over 117mph. Acceleration was equally satisfactory, with 0-60mph in 10 seconds, taking the car into sports car realms necessitating a promotion to a 120mph speedometer. For ease of use, power steering was now standard. Proudly so, the example we offer here runs and drives as well as it looks. Whilst we can not verify the mileage on the odometer of 65,000 miles as original from new, we are informed by the vendor that this Cloud II was restored just over ten years ago and it presents extremely well to this day having seen limited use but regular servicing. Repainted in an attractive two-tone scheme, the upper half is painted in dark blue whilst the lower sections of the body are painted in light blue; the stylish result almost belies the scale of what is often a very prominent sight. During the aforementioned restoration the engine and gearbox were rebuilt and the interior retrimmed; while the engine runs like clockwork, the interior shows signs of light use to the front bench seat and has lightly creased accordingly, giving the car an older feel. It is safe to say that Clouds are rarely found in such condition as this very well presented and sorted example and as such we highly recommend consideration of this elegant British saloon.
