Eulogising about Bentley’s new ‘S’-Series cars, introduced in 1955, The Autocar was to write, “The latest Bentley model offers a degree of safety, comfort and performance that is beyond the experience and perhaps even the imagination of the majority of the world’s motorists.” It went on to describe it as “a modern magic carpet annihilating great distances” and this was just the standard ‘S’ model they referred to. The Continental model, launched in September 1955, adopted the 4.9 litre engine as used in the standard cars, but with a higher compression ratio providing brisker performance and a higher axle ratio enhancing the comfort of the long distance continental trip. H J Mulliner’s lightweight ‘Fastback’ offered sensational styling on the ‘S’ Series cars – 17ft 8ins of sheer beauty and timeless elegance. Little wonder that the Bentley Stands at the world’s motor shows drew the largest crowds. Wind tunnel-designed aerodynamics set the model on a pinnacle and, along with the ‘R’-Type predecessor, Mulliner’s ‘Fastback’ ‘S’-Type Continental has firmly established its place in the league of the world’s great cars. This car was ordered in 1957 and delivered in January 1958 to its first owner, a Mr R E Hunt in South Africa. It later returned to the UK and then spent some time in California. It has been in the present ownership since 1980 and returned to the UK in 1992, since which time it has been meticulously maintained using the services of recognised Bentley specialists, including Healey Brothers, Hadley Green Garages and Straight Eight. The car has appeared at R-R.E.C. events and was selected to take part in the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Pageant in 2002. The car is Swansea registered, comes with an owner’s handbook, is fitted with a later radio and cassette player and comes with a file of papers recording recent history. It enjoys the benefit of air conditioning, fitted whilst in California, and power assisted steering. This elegant, original and cared for ‘magic carpet’ is presented in grey over sage green livery with beige leather interior and is currently licenced and MoT tested.
