BSA soon found that the fat wheels and voluminous mudguards of the S7 Sunbeam produced as many negative reactions amongst buyers as positive ones and so embarked on a styling exercise. Without altering the basic design they incorporated slimmer wheels of then standard sports machine sizes and narrower ‘guards to suit. A couple of new colours, black and silver-grey also contributed to the slimline look and the S8 was born for the 1949 season. The lighter weight and improved handling revealed what a good machine the S8 really was and sales quickly improved. Moto Znojmo in 1996 rebuilt this 1954 example for the museum, to original specification and finish. Following the rebuild and thorough testing, the S8 was placed on display and has remained so ever since. A simple re-commissioning should see it ready for the road again. The machine is offered with an Austrian registration document.
