Designed by the legendary Bert Hopwood and introduced in 1948, Norton’s 500cc twin-cylinder engine appeared in the racing singles’ ‘Featherbed’ duplex frame in November 1951, having debuted in the cradle-framed Model 7. Initially for export only, the newcomer - titled ‘Dominator 88’ - was the first production Norton roadster to feature the lightweight, race-proven chassis. Updated year by year, by the decade’s end the Dominator had received an alloy cylinder head, full-width hubs, welded rear subframe, alternator electrics, coil ignition and - for 1960 - the narrower ‘slimline’ Featherbed frame among countless other improvements. Paperwork relating to this Dominator 88 had yet to be discovered at the time of going to press. Purchased circa 2004 by Mr Stephens, the ‘Dommi’ was discovered in the Home Counties by his daughter. Apparently complete, original and unrestored, it was featured in Real Classic magazine (‘Original & Best’, May 2006 issue) and depicted bearing two tax discs, one dated July 1981 (possibly the last occasion it was used on the road prior to Mr Stephens’ purchase) and the other dated February 2007. The feature recounts how, after being given fresh petrol and a clean of the ignition points, the machine started after five kicks. The only parts considered in need of replacement were the accumulator, front tyre and the non-original siamesed exhaust system, which was substituted for one of correct pattern, while the magneto was sent away to be overhauled. Prospective purchasers are advised to contact Bonhams prior to sale to determine the extent of any accompanying documentation. Offered with original maintenance/instruction manual.
