Few cars remain so instantly recognisable as the Jaguar XK 120; its graceful and all-enveloping shape influenced the changing design of post-war sports cars. Introduced as a roadster in 1948 at the London Motor Show, it revolutionised the world's sportscar market by providing a genuine 120mph. The superb twin-cam six cylinder engine was to become the mainstay of all future Jaguar products, and brought five Le Mans 24-hour victories between 1951 and 1957. The world export demand for the XK 120 was so great that the first home market sales, in any quantity, did not materialise until 1951, the year in which the fixed head coupe version was introduced. The final variant of the XK120 was the drophead coupe which provided a more civilised version of the sportscar with a fully folding and properly trimmed hood, wind-up windows and more luxurious fittings. From September 1952, Special Equipment models were offered on the 120 series, the specification for these included high lift cam shafts, wire wheels with knock on hubs, and stiffer front torsion bars. On the drophead cars the SE cost ¨419 more. In line with Jaguar sales figures five cars for every one in the UK were sold with left hand drive - the majority, such as this car, were destined for America. Built on 15th July 1954, this example would have been one of the last supplied before production of the new XK 140 began, and it was sold new through Hoffman of California, originally with black paintwork and hood with a red interior. The car has recently returned to the UK from America and has since had some ¨3,500 spent on general sorting to make the car usable: this has included the fitting of a Kenlow fan and refitting of accelerator linkages. It lacks the inner wings and does not carry its original engine, though the engine fitted carries the correct high compression ratio designation '/8'. Offered with the benefit of a new MoT and with all taxes paid, the car is sold Without Reserve.
