A short-lived concern, Hoffman of Dusseldorf commenced with a range of proprietary-engined two-strokes and licence-built Vespa scooters, the make becoming an instant success. The Richard Kuchen-designed ‘Gouverneur’ flat-twins came out in 1951, putting the firm into direct competition with BMW. Sales of the expensive-to-produce flat-twins were small, making them rare today, and the firm closed its doors in 1954. The museum has owned this late 300 cc version of the ‘Gouverneur’ since 1969, making it one of the earliest exhibits. Bought because of its rarity, the machine was first used and then completely rebuilt ‘in-house’, all wearing components being replaced with new where necessary. The Hoffman has been on display ever since and will, of course, need a full safety check before starting and riding. The machine is offered with an Austrian Typenschein. “I liked it”, said Professor Ehn, “for its lovely sound and feeling of solidity”. The next owner will feel the same way.
