Harley-Davidson took a huge step into the future in 1949, responding to pressure from European competitors by introducing hydraulic suspension. Significant styling improvements were introduced that year for the Model FL with more fashionable, almost ‘art deco’, deep mudguards giving the bike an all-new look and by 1952 the name ‘Hydra-Glide’ appeared on the front mudguard, clearly identifying the new model which sold for around $900. Clever marketing by the Milwaukee operation offered a significant package of extras so that the more flamboyant riders could present their high-speed Harleys in ‘full dress’ – at greater cost of course. The Panhead FL was powered by an overhead-valve, 45˚, V-twin engine, developed 55bhp at 4,800rpm, had a four speed gearbox and offered a comfortable top speed of 100mph. The popularity of the FL resulted in the model being Harley’s most prolific production model of its era. This example comes from private enthusiast ownership and was the subject of extensive restoration in 2003. The frame was stove enamelled and finished in velvet metallic green livery, new handlebars were fitted and forks polished with new chrome surrounds. New mudguards were fitted and the seat re-covered in ‘fancy’ style. All mechanical components were checked over and repaired where necessary. The fitting of a Kavlar belt to replace the primary chain is a small concession to smoother gear changing and easier maintenance. We are advised that this spectacular machine handles and rides to match its looks and it is offered with a current MoT certificate valid to July 2004, Swansea V5 document and authenticity certificate from Roy Bacon’s dating service.
