1936 BERLIN OLYMPIC RELAY TORCH An official torch of the 1936 Olympic Games bearing the Olympic Flame carried by Austrian runner G. Votty. The torch, manufactured by Krupp, is inscribed : "ALS DANK DEM TRAGER * ORGANISATIONS - KOMITEE FUR DIE XI. OLYMPIADE BERLIN 1936 *". The Olympic flame was carried from its source in Greece by selected athletes across six nations, Greece, Yugoslavia, Hungry, Austria, Czechoslovakia and Germany. The flame was passed from athlete to athlete by torch across Europe to Berlin where it was used to light the Olympic torch at the opening ceremonies. 1936 was the first year of the torch relay.
