Sunbeam’s range of machines offered for the 1931 season catered for the touring motorcyclist as well as the competition specialists. The Model 9 was a splendid 500cc, overhead valve, touring bike which offered a turn of speed not too far behind the more sporting models. The range of bikes offered for the 1931 season had been dramatically slimmed down and the 1931 listing included the 344cc Model 10, the 492cc Lion, the sporting 493cc Model 90 and the Model 9 which retailed for £75. This was a dramatic reduction on the 11 bikes offered in 1930. This Model 9 is the more sporting, twin port-engined bike, of course embracing by 1931 the saddle tank. It was first registered in April 1931 and was acquired from Birmingham for the collection having sojourned in Shropshire in the 50’s and 60’s. The bike features sports handlebars, electric klaxon, hand gear change and new leather panniers have been fitted. It comes with old style buff log book and a Swansea V5 document.
