By the beginning of the 1930s, Fiat had turned its back on motor racing, concentrating instead on the expansion of its road car range. Its most successful model of the 1920s had been the Tipo 509, a model that dominated the Italian small-car market. The 509 was powered by a four-cylinder 990cc overhead-camshaft engine, but its 514 replacement, introduced in 1929, used a simpler 1.5-litre sidevalve ‘four’. Mechanically, the 514 was entirely conventional by the standards of its day, boasting semi-elliptic springing all round, a four-speed gearbox and four-wheel mechanical brakes. Two years later Fiat introduced the 515, a revised model that employed the 514’s sidevalve engine in a longer-wheelbase chassis that afforded greater interior space. The adoption of hydraulic brakes was the most important mechanical advance over the 514. The model proved popular as a taxicab and a total of 3,405 were produced up to 1934. This left-hand drive Fiat 515 saloon was previously owned by Prince Vittorio Emanuele Massimo and has been in the current owner’s possession for some considerable time. Benefiting from ongoing refurbishment over the years, the vehicle was restored in 1996/’97 and is presented in generally good condition. Finished in Bordeaux with grey interior, it is Italian registered on Roma plates and is offered with sundry restoration invoices. Offered without reserve.
