Jose Nasazzi, three times soccer World Champion as Team Captain of Uruguay, died in Montevideo in June of 1968. Five years later, a young woman, the one that inherited, or had the possession of the belongings of the “Great Marshall”, walked into the exchange houses of the main street in Montevideo, the 18th de Julio Avenue. She was offering fore sale five gold medals, of the several won during the sports career of Jose Nasazzi. The medals were sold at less than their gold weight in an exchange house of 18th Julio Avenue, between Paraguay and Rio Negro Street. Thanks to the manager, the medals were not melted down and conserved. These five medals bearing the name of the “Great Captain” were the Gold Medal awarded by FIFA as the first World Cup Champions plus four others. The second was a gold and enamel medal given by the AFA (Argentine Football Association). The third, a gold and enamel medal given by the Club Nacional de Futbol; the two other medals are not recalled. Shortly after, the broker decided to get rid of the medals. He sold them to a Numismatic and Philately store. This store was established for many years at 25 de Mayo Street, in the old city. Carlos Hoffman, the owner of this store being unable to sell the medals, returned them to numismatist. Some time later, one morning in June 1973, Rony Jorge Almeida Lopez, who was at that time a dealer in numismatics and antiques in Montevideo visited an old antique house in San Jose Street, the “Galerias Isie”. Isidoro, the gallery owner kept his dailey purchases inside a paper bag as scrap metal ready for the foundry, Rony Almeida took the paper bag and rescued the gold medal for posterity. It was the gold medal brought from Paris by Jules Rimet and awarded to the Captain of the first World Cup Winning Team, Uruguay. The presentation was not held after the Final, in fact it was not made until November the 11th 1930, when the Montevideo press reported “The Gallant World Champions received THIS medal”. Many investigations have been carried out with the aid of descendants of the players who represented their country on that historic day in July 1930, and only one other is belived to have survived.
