Born in San Francisco, Logan studied at the city’s Institute of Art and the California College of Arts and Crafts, where he later taught. In the 1920s, using an “intensely colorful palette”, he specialized in impressionist watercolor drawings of western scenes, from Mother Lode ghost towns to the Arizona desert. His commercial work included covers for Sunset magazine, and travel illustrations for railway and cruise companies, from California picturesque to exotic foreign scenes. Though best known for his western watercolors, Logan here colorfully depicts people and scenes in Monaco, Spain, Italy, Algeria, Turkey, the Holy Land, Egypt, India, Ceylon, Java, Philippines, Hong Kong and Peking (Beijing), Japan, Hawaii and Panama.
