1926 AUSTIN HEAVY TWELVE TOURER Registration No. KX 1365 Chassis No. TBA Engine No. TBA For restoration Engine: four cylinder, 1,861cc, 12.8hp, five bearing crankshaft side valves; Gearbox: four speed manual; Suspension: semi-elliptic leaf springs; Brakes: four wheel drum; Right hand drive. After the First World War, Austin produced a 3.6 litre side-valve, four cylinder Twenty which initially came close to bankrupting the company but subsequently proved a great success and was produced until 1929. Despite all these difficulties, in 1921 Austin introduced the 1,661cc Twelve, described in Georgano's Encyclopedia of Motorcars as " ..their second great vintage design, one of the hardest-wearing machines of all times ". It was enlarged in 1927 to 1.9 litres, stayed in production until 1936 (and even into the 1940s as a taxicab) and latterly immortalized in the childrens book series " Gumdrop ". This particular example was purchased by the current owner in 1956 from a Miss McKenzie of Oban, Argyll. It was in full working order and was loaned to a film company who were making "Rockets Galore" starring Jeannie Carson, on the Scottish island of Barra. Since that time the car has seen little road use and, indeed, has been stored for the past thirty years. It is fitted with its original open four-seat touring coachwork and is described as "requiring complete restoration", although the coachwork is believed to be basically sound. The engine turns and the car appears to be relatively complete, retaining its original hoodframe, seats, steering wheel and most of its instruments, magneto etc. The epitome of a "barn discovery", this original Heavy Twelve Austin will make a rewarding restoration project for the long winter nights. It is offered for sale Without Reserve.
