Recorded as manufacturers of the Elswick bicycle as far back as the early 1890s, W Newton & Co became the Elswick Cycle Company some time thereafter, establishing themselves at Barton-on-Humber in premises shared with F Hopper & Co, another cycle maker. Motorcycle manufacture is thought to have commenced around 1903, using Precision proprietary engines, and continued until 1920. This quite magnificent Edwardian motorcycle combination once formed part of the private collection of the vendor’s late father, Brian Frank, the well known and widely respected Yorkshire collector and restorer who died some half-a-dozen years ago. Equipped with three-speed Sturmey-Archer hub gear, acetylene lighting set, speedometer, bulb horn and that imposing ‘art cane’ (wicker) sidecar, this combination is a guaranteed head-turner at any gathering of Pioneer or Vintage motorcycles and thus an ideal ‘Brighton’ or ‘Banbury’ bike. Restored circa 1968 and recorded in the VMCC Register of Machines, the Elswick has been in the Frank family’s ownership for some considerable time and was regularly ridden and displayed by Brian, including trips to the Isle of Man TT, winning numerous concours awards. Little used in recent years, it will benefit from the customary safety checks and careful re-commissioning before being returned to the road. The machine is offered with Swansea V5 registration document.
