Title: 1896 Texas cabinet card photograph of a Caucasian man and woman, dressed in Japanese costume - "Collecting for Suffering Japanese" Author: Place: Publisher: Date: 1896 Description: Cabinet card photograph of a Caucasian man and woman dressed in unintentionally-comic, gaudy costumes apparently meant to resemble Japanese dress. The woman, in a kimono, and wearing an incongruous feathered hat, is holding a Stars and Stripes bag with a sign reading “Collecting for Suffering Japanese”. Lower mat embossed “Eagle Lake Studio, Eagle Lake, Tex.”; undated, but undoubtedly from 1896. The 4x5" image is complete, but the top portion of the mat is missing, leaving a 6½x9" mat which includes the photographer’s identification. In June 1896, Japan was struck by a 50 foot-high Tsunami that killed some 27,000 people, injured 5,000, destroyed 9,000 homes and carried away 10,000 fishing boats. That the Japanese plight should arouse charitable sentiments even in a rural Texas town was ironic in view of the anti-Japanese hysteria that would sweep America a half century later. Lot Amendments Condition: Lacks top portion of mat, lower portion has been repaired (was torn off), photograph itself with light rubbing at edges and very good. Board upon which it is mounted is good or fair. Item number: 248860
