1627 Cherry and Maple Inlaid Half Sideboard

Cherry and Maple Inlaid Half Sideboard, attributed to Rufus Norton, Windsor, Vermont, c. 1810-15, the top with bow front and inlaid edge on a case with an inlaid swag and tassel frieze, central cockbeaded deep drawer flanked by bottle drawers and long drawers below, all faced with bird's-eye maple veneer bordered by stringing and mahogany crossbanding, on a base with inlaid band and flaring French feet, replaced oval brasses, refinished, (minor imperfections),ht. 41, wd. 41 1/2, dp. 20 3/4 in. Literature: Rich and Tasty: Vermont Furniture to 1850, by Jean M. Burks and Philip Zea (Shelburne Museum, Shelburne, Vermont),shows closely related examples on pp. 66-67. There, the pieces shown are described as the "only known works by this cabinetmaker." The present lot is now another. The entry further notes: "the distinctive swag and tassel inlaid frieze, which is an application of neoclassical ornament found on some painted and stenciled interior wall borders of New England houses."
