Schätzpreis: *R (6.000,- €) / (7.500,- $) Adams M 672; Arents 11; Durling 3012; Hunt 94; Lack 9; Lesky 426; Nissen, BBI 1305; Pritzel 5985; STC 218; Wellcome I, 4143; diese Ausgabe nicht bei Bird, Osler, Plesch u. Waller, nicht in Wolfenbüttel. - "Mattioli's most famous work, the Commentarii in sex Libros Pedacii Dioscoridis , was first published at Venice in 1544... the Mattioli woodcuts are somewhat commonplace... Four of the later editions - in Czech, German, Latin and Italian, published in Prague (1562) and Venice (1565 and 1585) - contained, however, a new set of large-sized figures which are of considerable interest. As the preface informs us, they are the joint work of Giorgio Liberale of Udine and of a German named Wolfgang Meyerpeck. These woodcuts are similar in character to the earlier ones, but far more accomplished and expressive. Shading is extensively used, and the details are executed with great skill" (Blunt 58f.). - "First enlarged edition... the 1565 edition is the first augmented by Mattioli's fuller notes and has always been the most valued for its completeness" (Hunt). Bound in two volumes to facilitate handling, some heavier soiling and staining to beginning of second volume, otherwise mostly clean, old owner's entry to title-page and p. 637, overall an attractive copy, complete and with excellent impressions, 17th-century plain vellum bindings rebacked.
